Our Beginnings
Bare Feet and Crumpled Uniforms
The story of our beginnings
It started with a walk one morning in 2002. A few recently retired senior professionals decided to follow a group of children on their way to school. The children were wearing no shoes and their uniforms were worn and crumpled. But when they spoke with the children, what struck them most was not their circumstances. It was the confidence and enthusiasm the children showed despite it. That very day, they went and bought shoes for the children. This singular act of giving became the foundation of Seniors For Change.
Within days of this encounter the erstwhile professionals established Seniors For Change. The organization was based on a simple yet profound conviction: Life had given so much to them, it was now time to give to others. Unsurprisingly, they began by supporting underprivileged children with education. Working with government schools, they built infrastructure, provided nutrition, supplied study materials. Soon, they expanded their mission to include support for a Humanitarian Home for the destitute.
Through it all two things remained with them. The commitment when it came to giving to others was the same that they had brought to their corporate careers, as was the personal touch that SFC started with. They visited families, advocated for girls made to give up schooling, even paid for medical treatment on occasion. The work was never transactional. This is what made the difference.

Taking the SFC Legacy Forward
In 2022 our seniors decided to pass on the baton to a younger set of retired professionals. Rather than venture into new territory, we advanced what we had inherited. We created four structured, professionally managed programs: Providing Scholarships, transforming government schools into model schools, setting up digital labs and providing digital education. A program for the destitute that included organizing provisions and medical aid, and infrastructure development was also created. Our programs in education form a connected pathway from primary school to college, reaching more than 2000 children annually in urban and rural Bangalore.
Steadfast in Our Purpose
We also network with volunteers and voluntary organisations to further strengthen our programs by drawing on their expertise. We have accelerated the mobilization of resources to better manage our programs and increase their scope with events that raise awareness. Whether it’s through education or care, our purpose remains the same as that of our founding members. To provide the opportunities that help to push away the constraints that life often burdens the underprivileged with. We are grateful to our seniors who inspired us to live for others and take the organisation forward after them. This has given far greater meaning to our lives, and we feel blessed.
